To make Toronto and other major Canadian cities a hub for arts and entertainment, lectures and discussions that would bring awareness to the lives of the over one hundred million descendants of enslaved Africans throughout the Americas.
The Jabari Project is a co-sponsor of the annual birthday celebration of Malcolm X in Toronto in the month of May. This celebration takes place on the Saturday of the Victoria Day weekend, which is a weekend holiday in Canada. The Jabari Project and its co-sponsor DAMA (Diaspora African Muslims Association) are of the opinion that, given Queen Victoria's central place in the era of colonialism, it is inappropriate her birthday be a day of celebration for people of African heritage who reside in Canada and that, a much more fitting and worthier celebration would be the birthday of Malcolm X, an anti-colonial, human rights advocate, whose birthday is May 19th.
The Desmond-Woodson Lecture Series is a lecture series presented by The Jabari Project, named in honour of Viola Desmond, African-Nova Scotian pioneer of the modern civil rights movement in Nova Scotia and Carter G. Woodson, African-American originator of Black History Month.
AFRICAN NOVA SCOTIA - 17TH CENTURY TO PRESENT DAY
The Jabari Project was honoured to have Professor George Elliott Clarke deliver the first lecture of the Desmond-Woodson lecture series, in which he educated us about the extraordinary history and culture of the longest existing African community in Canada. This event was so highly informative and electrically engaging, the audience reached out to us, requesting a follow up to this lecture. As such, we will be presenting "African Nova Scotia Part II" in the later part of 2023; date and time to be determined. We will keep you posted.
A special thank you to the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) for its sponsorship of this event and to Din Kamaldin, a PIPSC board member, who, in recognizing the importance of this lecture, approached PIPSC with the idea of sponsorship, which was a first for PIPSC.
JAZZ: FROM AFRICA TO THE AMERICAS
FEATURING: THE WALID KUSH ENSEMBLE
The Jabari Project will be celebrating the diaspora African classical music called jazz, which originated in Africa.
The Jabari Project could find no more fitting a band than The Walid Kush Ensemble whose leader, Walid Abdulhamid, hails from Sudan, to perform for this event. Not only one of the foremost jazz musicians in North America, Walid also teaches music at the University of Toronto and Humber College. Walid is well versed in the rhythms and harmonies of Africa, which he blends with the evolved sounds of the African diaspora to create a wondrous musical experience that must be heard.
A Jabari Project Black History Month event, this performance will take place on February 25, 2023. Please see the poster above for details.
IT WAS AN EXCELLENT EVENT! An enchanting evening of great music with intros that connected the audience to the music. We'll be doing it again. Thank you Waleed.
IN CELEBRATION OF MALCOLM X DAY
JAZZ: FROM AFRICA TO THE AMERICAS VOL.II
MAY 20, 2023.
FEATURING: THE WALID KUSH ENSEMBLE
The birthday of Malcolm X is May 19th, whereas the birthday of the English queen Victoria is May 24th. Canada celebrates Victoria's birthday on the nearest weekend of her birth. Given that Malcolm's birthday falls near upon the same weekend, we choose to celebrate Malcolm's birthday and declare that weekend to be the Malcolm X Day weekend. Please join us in our 6th year of celebration on Malcolm X Day, May 20, 2023.
Our celebration will include poetry, drums and one hour of original Jazz compositions by the mesmerizing Waleed Kush Ensemble.
The evening's theme: THE NEED TO STAY FOCUSED
